Dungna Gewog farmers seek solutions to wildlife woes

Dungna Gewog in Chhukha boasts favourable climatic conditions conducive to cultivating a variety of crops, with rice as its primary focus. Nevertheless, farmers face challenges in the form of human-wildlife conflicts. Despite its remote location, the gewog has yet to receive the installation of electric fencing, a measure widely used in rural areas to keep the wild animals at bay.

19 additional convicts receive prison terms for human trafficking

The High Court has sentenced 19 more individuals to prison terms ranging from three to 13 years for their involvement in trafficking 200 Bhutanese women to Iraq and Oman in 2020. They were convicted recently. This decision adds to the previous sentencing of six women in the same case last year. Among the 19 is a couple who received a 13-year sentence for deceiving 44 Bhutanese women with false promises of overseas employment opportunities in the Middle East.

First-ever Bhutan Agri-food Trade and Investment Forum kicks off in Thimphu

To bring together local and foreign investors and entrepreneurs to explore trade and investment partnerships in Bhutanese agri-food, the Bhutan Agri-food Trade and Investment Forum began today in the capital. Supreme Court orders Druk Gi Kalapingka organiser to pay season five runners-up

The Supreme Court has ordered the organiser of the singing reality show Druk Gi Kalapingka to pay over a million ngultrum to the second and third-place winners of Druk Gi Kalapingka season five. This decision came after the show organiser could not send them to Australia for diploma studies following the show's conclusion in 2021. The judgment was passed last week.

BCCI planning to manufacture school uniforms within country

The Bhutan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) is planning to launch an initiative to manufacture school uniforms in the country. Through such an initiative, the BCCI intends to provide employment opportunities to unemployed individuals who underwent tailoring training. It will also ensure the affordability of school uniforms.

Bhutanese wildlife biologist wins Whitley Award for his efforts to save Gee’s golden langur

Kuenzang Dorji, a wildlife biologist at the Royal Society for Protection of Nature, has received the prestigious Whitley Award in London for safeguarding the endangered Gee’s golden langur and addressing human-wildlife conflict. He is among the seven conservationists selected from more than a hundred applications worldwide this year. The award, often referred to as ‘Green Oscars’ was presented yesterday with each winner receiving £ 50,000 to expand their conservation efforts globally. 

87 and going strong, Dengo relives his heydays

At 87 years old, age is just a number for Dengo from Paro, who participated as the oldest archer in the ongoing Jigme Dorji Wangchuck Memorial National Archery Tournament. Not only is he the oldest participant, but his team also comprised of elderly men all above 60 years of age.
